Mercator/Read with MEE, Europe Day, Campus Fryslân, Leeuwarden (NL)

The Mercator team has been invited to attend Leeuwarden Council’s Europe Day to showcase the interesting European projects they are currently working on and have worked on in the past. Admission to the event is free..

Europe Day

Curious about how Europe is visible in Leeuwarden and Friesland? Then come to Campus Fryslân on 8 May and join in the Europe Day celebrations! Between 12:00 and 16:00, the Campus will be transformed into a vibrant Europe Day hub, full of surprising activities, inspiring projects and friendly encounters.

Mercator

On Europe Day, the team from our Mercator European Research Centre on Multilingualism and Language Learning will of course also be present. Since 1987, Mercator has focused on regional and minority languages in Europe, but immigrant languages and languages from smaller countries are also subjects of research.

As a research institute, Mercator makes good use of the opportunities offered by the Frisian region as a laboratory of multilingualism. At the same time, Mercator makes pioneering research and other interesting developments from other minority language regions accessible to policymakers and other stakeholders in Friesland. In other words, the Mercator European Research Centre brings Europe to Friesland and Friesland to Europe!

Redbad

One of the projects that would not have got off the ground without European funding is the international Redbad project. This project is being carried out within the European Interreg VI programme Germany-Netherlands and is co-funded by the provinces of Friesland and Groningen and the State Chancellery of Lower Saxony. The exhibition ‘REDBAD: the legendary king’ at the Fries Museum in Leeuwarden promises to be a visual spectacle: the opening is on Saturday 5 September.

Han Nijdam will give a talk on the ancient Frisian king at the Europe Day. The organisers will announce the time as soon as possible.

Europe Day Programme

Everyone is warmly welcome at Campus Fryslân between 12:00 and 16:00. The programme will be available online shortly. Admission is free and the event is suitable for all ages.
