Sold-out Mercator conference on multilingualism also available online
On Thursday 7 and Friday 8 November, nearly 150 researchers from Europe, North America and Asia will come to Leeuwarden to participate in our conference on minority languages and multilingualism in education. This event is organised by Mercator, the European Research Centre on Multilingualism and Language Learning, part of the Fryske Akademy.
The theme of the congress is ‘Shaping Policy for Minority Languages and Multilingualism’. The three plenary speakers are
- Prof. Mirjam Günther-van der Meij (NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences)
“Space and place for regional languages in the Dutch school curriculum”
- Prof. Em. Jarmo Lainio (Stockholm University)
“About the role of individuals in the general outcomes of regional or minority language promotion”
- Prof. Sanita Martena (Rezekne Academy of Technologies)
"They must understand because it is the language of their mother": Parental strategies, family literacy events and child agency in maintaining family languages"
Free online attendance
Deputy Eke Folkerts of the Province of Fryslân will open the event, together with Dr Jelske Dijkstra (Mercator's project leader) and Dr Nelleke IJssennagger-van der Pluijm (managing-director Fryske Akademy).
The Mercator conference will be held at the Oranje Hotel in Leeuwarden (NL) and is sold out with 150 participants on site. For those unable to attend, the conference can also be followed online: all sessions in three halls will be streamed for free.
