Janneke Spoelstra, Eric Hoekstra en Erik Betten (fltr)

Verhalenavond (with an NGT interpreter) at the Fryske Akademy

Colleagues Janneke Spoelstra, Eric Hoekstra and Erik Betten will be sharing personal stories at the Fryske Akademy on Friday 20 November. The evening is being organised as part of the provincial Storytelling Evening, with the theme ‘My Roots’. NGT interpreter Anneke Kooistra will provide interpretation to and from Dutch Sign Language. Throughout the evening, visitors will be able to share their own stories at our scent table, part of the research project ‘A Nose for Heritage’, which is investigating the scents of Fryslân.

Eric Hoekstra: ‘How a linguist came to faith in Christ without even seeking it’

Linguist Eric Hoekstra shares, as part of the Story Evening, some supernatural experiences that have convinced him that Jesus is “the Way, the Truth and the Life”.

“I was brought up in an anti-Christian household and, until I was 57, I had never experienced anything supernatural. I had given up my search for the truth. Then, in 2017, I suddenly had a few supernatural experiences. As a result, I started going to church and read the four Gospels. Those texts told of miraculous healings, prophecies and demonic possession! When I found evidence of the reality of these phenomena, I began to believe in Jesus and the Bible.”

Eric will be sharing his story at 7.00 pm / 8.00 pm / 9.00 pm at the Fryske Akademy (Doelestraat 8, Leeuwarden). NGT interpreter Anneke Kooistra will be present to provide interpretation.

Janneke Spoelstra: "Just Different: LGBTIQ+ in Fryslân"

Janneke Spoelstra’s story is about a search for stories with which, as an LGBTIQ+ person in Fryslân, you can identify. Stories that speak not only to your Frisian identity, but also to your other / queer / LGBTQ+ side. Where can you find Frisian queer poems? Is there an exciting gay Frisian novel? An open-air theatre production with a wonderful lesbian lead role? Do you even exist as a Frisian non-binary person, if the dictionary offers no options for how to describe yourself?

Janneke will be telling her story at 7.15 pm / 8.15 pm / 9.15 pm at the Fryske Akademy (Doelestraat 8, Leeuwarden). NGT interpreter Anneke Kooistra will be present to interpret.

Eric Betten: "Beween the tongue and the fingers"

Erik Betten’s story is about Koda’s – children of deaf adults. KODA's often grow up as mediators who are on standby at all times. Both the ‘Deaf world’ and the hearing world around it have their own expectations, assumptions and blind spots. Writer and poet Erik Betten (50) talks about his experiences as a KODAs in Leeuwarden in the 1980s, with situations that could turn out to be both painful and hilarious.

Erik will tell his story at 7.45 pm / 8.45 pm / 9.45 pm at the Fryske Akademy (Doelestraat 8, Leeuwarden). NGT interpreter Anneke Kooistra will be present to interpret.

Spend the whole evening sharing your story at our scent table

What do you think Fryslân smells like? What are some typical Frisian scents or scent-related words? Are there any Frisian scents that are so valuable that we want to preserve them as heritage? What exactly is ‘scent heritage’, and who decides which scents are recognised as heritage?

The research project ‘A Nose for Heritage’ – a collaboration between the KNAW Humanities Cluster (Meertens Institute and NL-Lab), the Fryske Akademy and IFF (International Flavours & Fragrances) – is exploring the Frisian scent landscape together. We’re doing this not only with researchers, but also with the public. Everyone is warmly invited to the Story Evening to share their thoughts and experience the scents.

Scent researcher Lesine Moricke will be on hand at her scent table throughout the evening. Come and have a sniff and share your stories. NGT interpreter Anneke Kooistra will be present to provide interpreting when there are no talks (at 7.45 pm, 8.45 pm and 9.45 pm).
