[She is the Managing Director of the Fryske Akademy, but Nelleke IJssennagger-van der Pluijm (Hengelo, 1986) also researches the relationship between the Viking world and medieval Fryslân and is a professor in Groningen. ‘In this role, I can bring together research, teaching and both institutes.’]

This is how Managing Director and Professor Nelleke IJssennagger-van der Pluijm is introduced in the twelfth and last article in a serie: the Fryske Akademy and the daily newspaper Friesch Dagblad were working together in 2025 to put the people behind science in the spotlight.

For what do scientists do all day, and, better still, why do they do what they do? Where does that passion for the Frisian language and culture actually come from? Every month in 2025, in the Wykein supplement of the Friesch Dagblad, you could read more about what drives our colleagues and why they put their working lives at the service of Frisistics.

The interview with Nelleke can be read on the Friesch Dagblad (login required).
