Prof. Nelleke IJssennagger-van der Pluijm FSA, director of the Fryske Akademy – of which the Mercator European Research Centre on Multilingualism and Language Learning is a part – has also been professor by special appointment at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Groningen since 2025. She will deliver her inaugural lecture on 6 February.

IJssennagger-van der Pluijm's teaching assignment is Cultural History of the Southern North Sea Region in the Early Middle Ages and Viking Age. Her inaugural lecture is therefore entitled “Connecting Marginal Matters” ["Randzaken verbinden'].

Her argument focuses on the value of peripheral areas and seemingly peripheral themes in the study of cultural history, as well as the structural connection between them. She focuses specifically on the southern North Sea region (Frisia) during the early Middle Ages and the Viking Age (ca. 600–1100 AD).
