Mercator Multilingualism Lecture by Dr Sabine Little
Dr. Sabine Little is affiliated with the University of Sheffield as Senior Lecturer in Educational Studies (Languages Education) and Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Children's reading in home or heritage languages is typically absent from curriculum discourse, and teachers are pressured to meet targets which are almost exclusively tied to the societal language. And yet, helping pupils to draw on their multiple languages encourages an asset-based model of multilingualism. In this talk, I will present the Rivers of Multilingual Reading methodology as a way to bridge the home/school gap, and as a way to understand multilingual children's reading habits not just in isolation, but as an integrative and integrated aspect of their identity.
