Presentation at the European Day of Languages Conference (Brussels, Belgium)

On 27 September, the European Commission hosted a conference and a working lunch on the occasion of European Day of Languages. It was organised by the European Commission's Directorate-General for Education, Youth, Sport and Culture, in cooperation with the Network to Promote Linguistic Diversity (NPLD) and the European Union National Institutes for Culture (EUNIC).

'The conference theme was 'Learning three languages in school: multilingual education and cultural expression'. Participants were able to take part in a discussion about policy and practice, enjoy poetry, music and pictures and discover an exhibition presenting some less known languages spoken in the European Union (EU). All this demonstrated the richness of Europe’s linguistic heritage.' [from: edl2018.onetec.eu/...]

Friesland

The Frisian multilingual education system was one of the case studies. Mercator's Cor van der Meer (head Mercator Research Centre) en Rianne Blokzijl (secondary teacher in Frisian language and culture at OSG Piter Jelles) were invited to discuss strategies and succesful practices for language teaching and learning in multilingual regions.
