ELEN statement regarding the Spanish Supreme Court ruling against Catalan-medium education

The European Language Equality Network, the international organization for the protection, promotion and well-being of territorial and endangered European languages, strongly condemns the Supreme Court decision against Catalan-medium education which has ruled that schools must teach 25% of classes in Spanish. "The court ruling, if implemented, will have a severe negative impact on the immersion model itself and the whole ethos of immersion education. It will result in a decline in Catalan proficiency amongst schoolchildren as well as being deeply divisive to Catalan society."

Norway protects Lule Sami and South Sami

Norway notified the Council of Europe that it will apply Part III of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages to strengthen the protection and promotion of the Lule Sami language and the South Sami language.

Mercator project VirtuLApp honoured with several awards

Mercator's Erasmus+ project VirtuLApp has won the second prize of the Nuffic European Language Label for innovative education. The European Language Label is a European award to encourage innovative language projects and was presented at the Living Languages Congress 2021. The jury judged: 'The AR game is very innovative and can be played in 14 languages in every classroom.' Earlier in November, VirtuLApp's game BabelAR has been selected as one of three winners in the category Digital Product for the Henry van de Velde Awards '22. These Awards showcase Belgian products and services that demonstrate the added value of design.Until December 23, people can still vote on BabelAR for the Henry van de Velde audience award.

Catalan call for defense of digital linguistic rights

The president of Plataforma per la Llengua, Òscar Escuder, sent a letter to Margrethe Vestager, Executive Vice President and Head of the EU working group 'A Europe fit for the digital age', denouncing that the Spanish state ignores the European Parliament's resolution to promote linguistic diversity on the Internet.

Minority report presented in Schleswig-Holstein

Schleswig-Holstein presented a new minority report in the State Parliament in Kiel. It provides information about the minorities and their work in the German-Danish border region as well as about the ethnic groups of the Frisians and the German Sinti and Roma living in Schleswig-Holstein.
