General information organisation |
The Gramma Language Office is an integral unit of the Gramma Association. It is supported by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and is part of the network of research institutes operating in countries neighboring Hungary. One of the main factors motivating the establishment of the Gramma Language Office was that before its foundation no institution existed in Slovakia that investigated the first language use of Slovakia Hungarians, their bilingualism, or their variety of Hungarian. Before the 1990s such linguistic issues were only dealt with by language cultivators who judged and stigmatized all differences between varieties of Hungarian used outside Hungary and Standard Hungarian (i.e. the standard variety of Hungarian used in Hungary). The Gramma Language Office is dedicated to carrying out linguistic research on topics relevant to the bilingualism and first language use of Slovakia Hungarians using up-to-date research methodologies such that its findings are comparable to results of similar research elsewhere in the world.
