Τhe Hellenic Literary and Historical Archive, better known as E.L.I.A., is a cultural non-profit organisation.
Its basic aim is to collect, preserve, classify, research and publish 19th and 20th century archival and printed material, particularly that which relates to the modern history and culture of Greece. In addition, E.L.I.A. supports research and dissemination of results across a broad range of academic orientations.
Founded in 1980, it has collected and preserved during its twenty years' activity an invaluable collection of material, which under other circumstances would have been lost forever.
E.L.I.A. is located in a privately owned five-storey neo-classical building near the Cathedral of Athens (the Mitropoli). It was built around 1930 and covers 625 sq. m. at 5 Aghiou Andreou Str., just off Aghias Philotheis Str. in Plaka.
E.L.I.A. has recently expanded its premises to a post-World War II period building just across the street from the main building.
The new building, located at 4 Aghiou Andreou Str, belongs to the Rizareio Ecclesiastic School and has been leased by E.L.I.A. for the next 35 years, the restoration of the building was made possible with the kind support of the “Stavros S. Niarchos” Foundation.
3rd Community Support Framework The expansion of the premises of ELIA was combined with the funding project “Equipment Upgrading and Addition” by the 3rd Community Support Framework. The expenditure included in this project mainly covered the acquisition of special storage facilities for the archival collections, computer hardware and software, shelving, photocopying machines as well as some work contracts with specialist external collaborators. The project amounts to a total of 757,000 euros and aims at the continuous modernization of ELIA, the more effective preservation and utilization of its archival collections with the employment of new technologies, and at the improvement of use potentiality of the material by third parties. |
