General information organisation The Sorbian Institute in Bautzen carries out research into the past and present situation of the Sorbs (otherwise known as the Wends) in Upper and Lower Lusatia, concentrating on their language, history and culture. It collects material that is needed for this research, organizes it into archives and at the same time makes it available to the public. The Institute also engages in inter-disciplinary research focussing on the current situation, the specific circumstances and the comparative study of minority languages and cultures in Europe. It is a particular aim of the staff of the Institute to influence the cultural and linguistic practices in both parts of Lusatia. The Sorbian Institute, which is situated in Bautzen and has a branch in Cottbus, was founded on 1 January 1992 by the Free State of Saxony together with the State of Brandenburg as a registered society. It continues the tradition established by the ‘Institut za serbski ludospyt’ (an institute for research into all aspects of the culture, history and language of the Sorbian people, henceforth called the Sorbian Ethnological Institute), founded in 1951, which existed outside the university system. From 1952 to 1991 it was attached to the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin which was renamed the Academy of Sciences of the GDR in 1972. The Institute in Bautzen collaborates with other academic institutions, both at home and abroad, and it runs courses at universities and colleges of Higher Education. Every two years it hosts an international summer school in the language and culture of the Sorbs.
