November 28, 29 2014 - The international conference on Multilingualism and Social Media was held in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands, co-organised by SOAS (University of London) and Mercator Research Centre (Fryske Akademy).

A wide variety of cases, research and issues were presented to the audience, such as: the importance of internet for a language, the growing availability of tools, the role of social media for education and perspectives for endangered languages. Fruitful discussions and a joint wish for future European co-operation completed the conference and made it a success.

On Friday afternoon, a special presentation was focused on the Facebook Frisian translation sprint which took place during the conference, a community-driven initiative by volunteers addressing the need of minority language speakers to use social media interfaces in their own (minority) language.
