Biografy

Jan Ybema (Workum, 1991) studied Frisian Language and Culture (BA), Modern History and International Relations (ReMa) and Middle Eastern Studies (MA) at the University of Groningen (RuG). At the Frisian department of the RuG, he was a student-assistant to prof. Goffe Jensma, and contributed to developing the curriculum for the Minorities and Multilingualism study programme.

His history master thesis was an oral history of the Frisian dairy industry, 1950-1980, as part of a research project at the Fryske Akademy. It was presented at a Sieperda Symposium (2016). For Middle Eastern Studies, after he had finished an internship in East Jerusalem, he wrote a thesis about Jewish socialist and zionist Sam de Wolff (who was born and raised in Sneek).

Since 2017 he has worked as a journalist for the regional newspaper Friesch Dagblad. He is the author of Een kleine geschiedenis van Friesland voor dummies (2017). At the Mercator European Research Centre, he works as a research assistant in the Global Citizenship project and as an editor of regional dossiers.
