The ‘FRY-EUS’ project seeks to compare two regions on how to handle several languages in education. Both regions deal with a minority, a dominant and a popular third or foreign language. Mercator carries out the project on behalf of the Basque Ministry of Education and in cooperation with the University of the Basque Country. There are two research groups: one in Fryslân (Mercator) and one in Donostia (University of the Basque Country). The general research objectives are to analyse bilingualism and multilingualism as a resource for the individual and society and to analyse bilingualism and multilingualism as a resource at school.
There are three research assistants based in Fryslân: Mirjam Günther-van der Meij, Jildou Popma, and Truus de Vries (the Mercator Research Centre, Ljouwert / Leeuwarden) and one is based in the Basque Country: Elizabet Arozena.
Project leader is René Jorna of the Mercator Research Centre in collaboration with Durk Gorter (Ikerbasque / University of the Basque Country, Donostia / San Sebastian) and Jasone Cenoz (University of the Basque Country).
In March 2010 the report: Frisian and Basque Multilingual Education: A Comparison of the Province of Fryslân and the Basque Autonomous Community has been presented. You can download the PDF version of the report.
