Basque students visit Mercator Research Centre and Fryslân

Between 21 and 30 June 2009 a group of 17 students of the Txindoki-Alkartasuna Institute in the Basque Country realised an exchange trip to Friesland.

The aim of this was to learn more about the Frisian language and to reinforce the student’s use of English. The first contact with Fryslân, started on year ago, when a small group of students visited the Bogerman School in Snits / Sneek.

The programme consisted of the stay in families and a series of activities to realise all together. There was also a visit to the Mercator Research Centre, part of the Fryske Akademy. In a very relaxed atmosphere the Basque students received a series of clarifying notions about the Frisian language. It was very interesting for them to know that even when the Frisian language is different from Dutch, you do not find any problem to understand Dutch speaking people. That is totally different from the situation in the Basque country, because Basque language is completely impossible to understand for any Spanish speaker. They thought that the linguistic distance between Frisian and Dutch would be similar.

The students of the Bogerman School pay the Basque a visit in September 2009.
