A multifaceted perspective on teaching materials in multilingual education: creation, production and distribution

A seminar with the title “A multifaceted perspective on teaching materials in multilingual education: creation, production and distribution” took place from 5-7 November 2008, at the Mercator Research Centre in Ljouwert / Leeuwarden. A selected group of participants was invited to the seminar. Experts from different European minority language regions discussed the processes involved in the creation, production and distribution of teaching materials.

Despite the different national contexts, it turned out that minority language communities need to address similar challenges. The costs for a limited production of materials and lack of standardisation of the minority language, for instance, are obstacles in the process of teaching material development that many minority language communities share. The seminar offered a platform for discussion on the creation, production and distribution of teaching materials, and for inspiration from best practices in this field.

The organiser of the event was the Mercator Research Centre, based at the Fryske Akademy. The seminar is part of the cooperation between the Mercator Research Centre and the Ministry of Education of the Basque Autonomous Community in Spain. The seminar is an element of a series: in November 2007 a seminar on the renewals within the Basque Education system took place. The next seminar will be organised in June 2009, on “Pedagogy and didactics for multilingual education in RML-regions”.
